DEVOTIONAL: “These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:10 ESV.
CHALLENGE: Praying in God’s Spirit. The Holy Spirit is important to Christianity, but what exactly does He do? Kendrick says, “The Holy Spirit is the engine of the Christian life, guiding and empowering us to do what we cannot do on our own.” Many times this includes praying. The Holy Spirit operates in ways that are not necessarily easy for us to understand. “His indwelling presence and loving encouragement” stabilizes our “utter helplessness.” How does He do this?
Kendrick shares three activities of the Holy Spirit in our lives. “By understanding the Holy Spirit and how He operates, we take our prayer into the ever-flowing stream of God’s activity.” The three ways the Spirit helps us in our prayer lives are: “He reveals God and His Word to us”; “He prays for us”; “He guides our praying”. (See The Battle Plan for Prayer, chapter 25.)
The New Testament, especially the epistles of Paul and the Gospels, are filled with teachings that demonstrate these activities. As you read your devotions this season, keep track of how the Holy Spirit is working in the lives of Jesus, Paul and the Apostles, and their teachings concerning the Spirit of God. How has the Holy Spirit moved in your prayer life this year? Are you eager to see how He will move you this coming year?
